Friday fierce sun

Some random thoughts.

What if there were an “Angry Man” frozen dinner? The giant in Jack and the Bean Stalk could have come home and asked for it? Fee Fi Fo Fum, Angry Man dinner. From the car to the table in one temper fit.

What if someone put a cut out of Farmer MacGregor with his shot gun standing in wait for bunnies on Enterprise Way in Kelowna. The city has now hired a “culling” company to shoot all of the insurgent released former pets. Would it be seen as an infringement of copyright and get national attention? I hear the Beatrix Potter estate is vigilant.

What if someone demonstrated “Right to Life” on Enterprise Way to protest the slaughter of rabbits via shotgun within the city limits?

What if the new green plan for inner city was pouring green colorant into cement? Would we be fooled? “Oh, an urban forest. How relaxing.”

Our city has geese, rabbits and marmots which are considered pests. Why can’t these be served at the Bridge Opening to cut expenses? Kebab is everybody’s favorite barbecue. Who would know?

The first people over the bridge, Hey, wouldn’t that be the workers?

What if people had to pay in advance to talk to artists, then artists would make money, maybe even a profit. 1-888-chatart?

What if developers made a presentation that didn’t say, “It will attract tourists.” Instead, what if they said , ” It will attract local citizens.”

No more randomness- ploting the plot!

The front yard is magnificient, trimmed and I am fooled into thinking the natural world can be tamed. The English heritage of creating a rolling green punctuated by roisterous crowds of flowers makes me feel as if I had a Monopoly sized version of a great estate. Ah grandure and control. I have managed to fool myself again.

The backyard on the other hand is a construction zone where stalled projects wait. This year…. we promise ourselves. The area I am setting my sites on is 10 by 10. I believe that by claiming calmness for this small area the illusion of control of the universe will soothe my delusional mind in the short term. Respite, a meditation area in the shade out of the fierce sun. Not this Friday, but one Friday.

Thursday in white terry

Ten hours sleep and open my eyes to sun. The vibrancy has eluded me. I shift myself up and out into a white terry bathrobe which is on its last fibrous legs. All morning I take my delete scythe and cut through my email. I can feel every micro tear in my newly building body. I am convinced it is a good sign if I can’t… sign that is because my hand and wrist are so painfully obstructed.

We didn’t go up Knox Mountain today but I have mentally moved the day off scheduled for Saturday to become today.

Feeding my eblog site, deleting emails, looking for opportunities through my goggle daily mail outs and loading in images and fluffying up my facebook presence has pretty much taken the day. The justification I can always use for non-action is action. A day off for a workaholic is such a joke.

Vision of reclining in the sun with a glass of lemonade and a book keep glowing on my mental screen. Guilt for not being in the studio, not finishing my housework, not completing my submissions, not getting the last few closets cleaned out…. it is whack a mole for me. No matter what I am doing, I feel quilty for what I am not doing. Hey a no win game.

But as Mr. Tolle says, at least I am watching myself, watching myself.

The lawn waits to be mowed. I might perhaps say the rain forest awaits. This months’ crop of dandelions is spectacular.

Margaret Laurence had in one of her books a photograph of the house she lived in when she wrote some famous work. I could only feel horrified that she had let the lawn go in such a manner. She should have been out straightening the undergrowth and such.

No wonder I only have a window for creation. The rest is spent keeping my surroundings in order. But if it is important…. Peacefulness, calm, the household goddess. The important thing is not to expect perfectionism in all things.

Oh! too late. Perhaps not too late. I could become more perfect about expecting perfections.

Checking out/checking in

Today I finally got around to checking out the display of my work on upstreampeoplegallery.com which has juried work in themes on display. I have had work posted there before and was accepted for the 5th annual colour: bold/subtle show which ran December 1, 2007 until November 30, 2008. The images look really.. well… bold. So that is pleasing.

I have some custom cards for sale at Picture Perfect. Today I went over to swap some out and bring more in. Tracie is wonderful to deal with. She is a level headed business person, but manages to be very gracious at the same time. Today I will prepare a portfolio to take over to the store and leave in place… on second thought I think I will prepare two so that their Vernon store has one as well.

The morning after

Who hit me with an anvil/hammer thing. Sore everywhere. Long hours at these festivals. We had eleven hours Friday, ten hours Saturday and a mere six hours Sunday. Janice across the way modeled the good behavior of cleaning up the studio before I left, so we were both there a good hour and 1/2 after the rest cleared out.

It was good to see so many people discover the attic in the Rotary Centre. Because of the layout of the building, it appears as if the area where we are working is a no go zone. Most are being thoughtful or polite by not coming back along the bend in the wall and traveling up our hallway to discover…. us!

Another cold, gray day. However, the weather channel promises us that we will all be living in the tropics by Wednesday. Where is that instant season switch on my body?

But while we are whining about the weather we do mention that we can’t complain. There are no funnel clouds, no earthquakes, we are not standing waist deep in the aquarium of our homes, there are no tropical rainstorms, tsunamis, electrical storms burning the powerlines into powder. See, we do live in paradise.

Point of view.

Art Walk is the next art festival that all of us at the Rotary Centre are participating in. I have the One Woman show in July and another at the end of August. Also, two images are now on display in Toronto and one in Sacramento. Edmonton’s The Works festival has some of my art at the consignment tent, as well. In September I am preparing a bridges of Europe series for the Bean Scene North on Ellis street. Meanwhile, I finished many hand made art cards to go for sale at Shop the Valley, Summerhill winery.

I have begun the article for Senior’s Choice Magazine about the senior senoras at the Centre. I expect to learn a great deal about the women artists who have studios surrounding mine. It will be interesting.

Kelowna is beyond the crossroads. I remember when five years ago people spoke about the cross roads. Now we are just putting in more roads period. The design to hold long-term value comes as a result of vision on the part of the public and the politicians. When we run our household, we have a strategy and a governing philosophy in place. Our family has practices that we adhere to. Yes, buying a new computer would be fantastic but our goal is to pay down our debts. Without a firm commitment to a philosophy, we are at the whim of our own urges.

And we all know how amazingly agile the mind is at creating justifications for variants from the vision. Be it variants from requiring parking, considering run off, providing affordable housing, keeping the seniors in place in a neighbourhood which will protect and look out for them, so many editions arise. If acquiring some glittering gold blinds us and it will, then we veer.

We can create justification for any decision in the moment if we are after money, power, status instead of adhering to a path of stewardship of the environment and the community. Why wouldn’t it be just as difficult for a government to stick to a vision as it is for an individual? Having the Part of the globe series to revisit is one way of dealing with the vicissitudes of political life.

Thursday, Kelowna is 98th on Money Sense Magazine Poll

Oh the outrage!! So many people are just whipped into a frenzy about the new Money Magazine article which places Kelowna  98th in all of Canada for liveability. According to the survey, discretionary income in this city was $23,000, with an unemployment rate of 4.5 per cent. Housing prices topped $515,000.

Well liveability includes being able to pay for food, shelter and medical care somewhere in the definition. The cost of everything is being pushed up because of the “desireability” factor here. The blank check written for the Mission Pool Complex will mean a 12% raise in taxes over the next few years, perhaps more. The new golden towers in the sky downtown will also spin off into a bill on the homeowners’ taxes for infrastructure costs.

I frequently think of various types of investment in Kelowna. There is the investment in a quick pick up property that will be rented out when the situation is not optimum. The weather is too gray, what if the water has become polluted to the point where nobody goes swimming or Ogopogo is crawling around on a scrabble of rocks, the air becomes polluted, the season is not long enough… so sublet the place and forget it.

The other type of investment is the person who buys an older home, asks for heritage assessment and refurbishes the place to become a jewel. Yet another investment is emotional. The neighbour who goes out onto the street to see why there was a crashing noise, why the child is crying, why the dog is howling. The neighbour who mows, shovels, picks up blowing newspapers… just helps out without thinking about it. Emotional investment is the one that the city gets the most long-term return on. It doesn’t cost the city… it saves the city money. If we can keep our young people with their skills and vision , if we can keep our vigilant seniors in place then we truly have a community.

Without that, without affordability we are on our way to an uninspired or uninteresting place to live… and we will move further down the economic ladder because vision, education, environment are all part of the energy of an urban setting that is healthy and consequently wealthy.

On line I just recently read the article, “Miami, Crime and Urban Design,” by Alfredo Triff.
If sildenafil for sale you want key information about the drug, treatment, dosage and FAQ. The combine use of Mast Mood oil and Kamdeepak https://regencygrandenursing.com/product4000.html viagra no prescription capsule offer effective cure. Valium, Alprazolam, Codeine, cheap professional viagra http://regencygrandenursing.com/long-term-care/nutritional-management, Xanax, Acetaminophen, Lorazepam, and Ativan are all available. Chondroitin Sulfate – Well known order viagra regencygrandenursing.com as a product that is sold, and the commission is passed on to you, usually once or twice monthly.
What is interesting about the article is that he first examines architectural analysis of what is effective Urban Design in the construction of a safe, integrated space.

In an architect’s,” analysis of the relationship between design and crime in public housing, [Architect] Newman came up with three crucial factors: territoriality, natural surveillance, and image/milieu. Territoriality assumes that people need to mark out and defend their territories. Good design encourages people to express these urges: They would defend their space against intrusion by outsiders. For example, a well-designed housing project would make clear which spaces belonged to whom — that is, some would be completely private, some could be shared with permission from the owner..” Triff goes on to say that perhaps it is even a greater structure that is faulty when there is high crime or a feeling of being unsafe in a city… the design of the government itself.

“Let’s stop seeing crime solely as a subjective and isolated matter. Our civic leaders and planners need to understand that a factor in our crisis is this: We don’t see ourselves as part of a greater community with commonly held aspirations. If we did, the general distribution of crime would substantially decrease. People don’t pilfer when they believe they have an ownership interest.”

So in summation, architects and urban designers have stated that no more than four stories should interact with the street life in order to encourage a sense of connectedness and vitality. A step down encourages people to step out.

Sorry to get all worked up about going up but Kelowna has to wake up to the idea that affordability is a major, crucial issue in terms of the “life” of the city.

The Art Crawl was very successful because there were actually 15 people who came to some studios and 20 who came to others. It will be an incredible day when we have no food left at the end and are not having to take home wine.

Ever wonder what small choices we are making which can irretrievably change our entire future? At times it seems as if we can make mistake after mistake or make wonderful, skilled choices one after another and yet there is no change to our trajectory. Then one day we kick some wet leaves, as I did in a depressed, starving moment while in graduate school, and there it is….. a $20 bill with which to buy groceries.
