Wine Art and Music at the Rotary Centre for the Arts

Two nights ago the WAM event brought in 45 people to my studio space. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to share my work with others. Many of the attendees were residents of Kelowna. Even more pleasing is that locals are supporting local art.

Michael Garding put together a group for the show. Cameron came down after he finished his gig in Penticton at the wine festival there and sat in for a bit. He has played with the drummer, Martin Lord, in Just in Time. For three years the trio was the award winning Jazz group at the B.C. Music competition. And strangely enough NONE of the guys got ahold of friends or relatives and had them send in nominations or votes.

Restructuring

I am repainting the home studio and trying to move out that which we do not need. My goal is to create a clean, spare, organized space. There is too much chaos in my life. Too much heaviness. Too much confusion. I can do something about objects.

Focusing on the art business, through reading library books, ordering information on line and looking at what others are doing, is also happening right now. Relearning the same lessons, rechurning the same issues. I am beyond restless with the becalmed feeling.

I have been reading Thich Nah Han about anger lately. There is so much to do when anger and frustration arises. Sitting down and breathing through it. “Take care of your anger. It is your baby.” One can almost hear his voice speaking.

What has happened so that the retirement years have become so tense, competitive and insecure. I always assumed that I would serve my twenty some years and then have a chance for some peace. A bit of adventure and travel might be my lot. But the most basic issues keep threatening.

Where is freedom? Perhaps in wisdom. Perhaps in my working through my expectations and disappointments.

Hanging Fire, After “The Pearl Harbour of Financial World.”

So much is hanging fire right now. The Canadian elections both federal, provincial and in our city are about to either entrench a system that is eroding the middle class and services to the elderly, weak and young, or there will an awakening and the climate and care for society will become a new focus. The United States is staggering around on its elephant legs threatening to fall on us. We are closing our eyes and wishing for just an injury or two and not a cartoon like flattening.

What will the result of the financial “Pearl Harbour” be on the U.S. elections and on the rest of the world? Will the emphasis on finances move the agenda of environment right off the screen?

Recently, we have been reading that prolonged stress can deplete the thyroid gland’s function and create depression. Can this be true of a nation as well? The recurrent fear and defensiveness that becomes offensiveness can deplete a nation. Sometimes a country just needs to take a decade off and have a long domestic holiday…

Kamloops Gala Art Auction Tonight

Image from building in Paris

I am headed up to Kamloops for the Art Auction tonight. It is against my usual practice of sitting home working in my studio or cleaning my environment… physically or psychically. To go out and socialize is difficult for me however much I look like an extrovert.

It is wonderful that so many artist contribute art for charitable purposes and principally to help fund galleries and social causes. Hey Stephen Harper. I know you play the piano a little. I hear you stumble over the words to describe your daughter’s attraction to art. Almost like a staunch conservative describing a “gay” son or daughter. ” My daughter…she is…. she is (long pause) kind of … she likes art.” Oh the lack of alacrity, the dearth of language, the hesitancy.

At the same time, smoking makes the condition worse and affects the men’s erection health badly. order levitra online When they have someone young and attractive flirting with them, it gives their ego a big boost sildenafil tab and encourage them to have an affair. What treatments are much safer for patients? The Chinese medicine accumulates the rich clinical experience about how to treat this sickness. generic cialis india Soothing, professional, cialis online cialis abdominal massage can diminish the adhesions and open passages; thus, may also reduce pain. Well it is the artists who live at the bottom of the well and get by on very, very little that are the first to contribute to children’s causes, cancer charity fund raisers, drug rehabilitation drives, animal shelters and local art galleries and programs. Some of us have donated as much as we have made in profits in the past few years. Ever wonder how much Stephen Harper is donating to these causes…. judging by his funding of the same on a national level…. I would venture to guess it is not proportional by income.

Artists are the heart and soul of a society. Do we remember the business men of Greece, Rome and Italy? Do we have people lining up to see the athletic scores of competitions held back then? NO. It is the artists be they “big names” or anonymous that lift our spirits that make us feel connected to the humanity that is universal.

So I will go and meet the other artists. They are my inspiration.

Art for those on the Forward Edge

The glow of windows on the fabric of life, digital

I have been thinking a lot lately about who the perfect customer is for my art. Those who seem to fall in love with it are graphic and fine art students. Others are people who live in several cities. And, also, healing practictioners love the fields of energy depicted in my work. What have these people have in common: not income, not age demographics, not philosophy of life. They are all very much into exploring the Urban environment and finding unique ways to express themselves. Hence the slogan…

Another concept that I have been able to stand back and formulate from observing my work is that it has different life in differing light. Because Kelowna is brilliantly tropical in lighting over the summer and then plunged into a gloomy gray throughout most of the rest of the year, a work of art has to live in different levels of illumination. I have been painting into the images with the idea of giving the work a totally distinct personality depending on the conditions. The background blacks move to the forefront as the evening arrives and the art light bathes the surface. During mid day, the light washes over the surface and brings up the metallics, the layering of green, gold, red or blue beneath the glass bead. At times, the foreground is one structure and at another time of day, the foreground is another structure.

Compared to super viagra generic , it has less side effects and can last for weeks, months, and in some cases even years. These infections should be treated in early http://www.jealt.mx/aviso.html levitra 20mg uk stages to prevent the happenings of cardiac dysfunctions. Regular exercise, especially cardiovascular assists to keep up levitra de prescription the erection long enough for the duration of sexual intercourse. A lot of males that experience suffer with thoughts of incompleteness; they order cialis uk experience un-manly, poor, and very insecure. Like the personality of individuals, there is a shifting of qualities. Also, I have begun to realize that what I am painting IS energy fields. It is interesting to see that so much of my life experience is in my work: dance training, theatrical training, lyrical love of music and spiritual practice. The work has found me, I have not found it. I let the work itself drive the exploration.

We watched a dvd last night called “Cooking your Life.” Focused on a Zen retreat whereby the participants cook and bake in order to explore themselves, the video is inspiring. One Zen student said, “When people ask, ‘ how are you?’ I answer, ‘I am baking bread.’ ” When people say to me how do you get the idea for your art, I know that the art has the idea of me.

Minister of Highways
Province of British Columbia
Victoria, BC
Dear Minister;
Re: Plan to Sink Bridge in Okanagan Lake
Using Okanagan Lake as a landfill site for the old bridge demonstrates a profound lack of awareness and public stewardship for land and water uses, public policies, drinking water supplies and human health in the Okanagan.
Bid documents prepared by your ministry show bridge contractors knew the plan to sink the bridge may not be acceptable.   Contractors were encouraged to make contingency plans for various on-land disposal options.  They should use on-land disposal – not the lake.
It is your government and your ministry who wants to sink the bridge in order to save money – not the contractor.
Drinking water in the Okanagan is a precious resource.   Water reservoirs require the highest level of protection from waste dumping activities and should not be used for landfill projects of any kind.  Period.
Your support for this plan is unacceptable.   Advocating that the public drink the water from landfill sites is unacceptable.
What’s next?   Asking residents to drink from our toilets in order to save money on sewer infrastructure costs?

The issue of water quality here is about the sediments which are stirred up by the disposal of the old bridge. Sediments found in the lake include various toxic and poisonous substances.

Most Liveable Cities Debate on CBC

Yesterday, on the new show The Point hosted by Aamer Haleemthe issue of criteria for most liveable cities was discussed. http://www.cbc.ca/thepoint. One panel member who was a writer for an arts magazine in Calgary felt that these list are mostly about low crime, low cost of living and have very little to do with the ambiance and vibe of a city. The three cities mentioned as the most welcoming and warm that offered a sense of wonder and exploration were 1.Barcelona  2. Copenhagen 3. Prague.

One point that really struck home with me was the issue of disparity. When a city has multiple homes for the rich and few homes for the working class… turning them into the “working poor” then the city becomes uncomfortable and therefore unlivable.

Kelowna once hosted two professors from Lethbridge that discussed what Canadians were looking for in livable mid-sized cities and the list was short: inexpensive housing and cost of living; low crime rate; unpolluted environment;a place to walk the dog. Our fair mid-sized city has a big price tag for housing and cost of living; a high crime rate; increasing problems with higher traffic in a valley setting not to mention the imminent water shortage issues; it has traditionally been difficult to find an off leash dog park.

Kelowna is one of the fastest growing cities in North America; rapid development sometimes causes growing pains. One of those consequences is that Kelowna is the fifth most expensive housing market in Canada behind Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria.
