Preparing for the show in Vienna is exciting and challenging. First of all there is the difficulty of artists from around the world communicating. The languages we are working through are English, German and French. In addition, there is the issue of the language which we each speak in our art.

I have to bring order to the house, pick up art work today for sale at a local gallery, finish my paperwork for the UBC O payroll people and tonight the joyful opportunity to pick up the Heritage Conservation Award from Kelowna’s Heritage Society. Actually, art is integral to politics. It is not that one must pursue a “message” in the traditional, Marxist diligence of past decades. Politics is a word which means of the people.

Art is the soul’s work. When a person is deeply in tune with their own song, vision, cosmology there are two divergent sources. One is interior. The soul that speaks is unique and in my belief system (which could be wrong) it carries over from life time to life time. It is unbending, unerring and distinctive.

At the same time, one’s soul is like an infant floating in the social milieu that one is born into. There is nothing more awakening in life than traveling to other cultures. I liken our view of reality to that of fish swimming in an aquarium. We do NOT see the water. We think it is invisible. However, it is that through which we view everything. Simply put, it is incorrect to drive in the left lane. It is incorrect to live at home until one is married. It is incorrect to squat on the ground for social events

Culture shock is when one runs up against another picture of reality and withdraws in protective shock.

Chipping the ice away from the back step, I thought to myself that in order to take steps you have to first see the steps. We in Kelowna’s North end are all clearing the way for ourselves to engage in a normal work a day world.

Studio Fair, Prince George

I am just completing my shipment to the wonderful arts festival in Prince George. Studio Fair has as its coordinator Jennifer who is delightful to work with. Dealing with artists can be stressful at the best of times and Jennifer makes her job sound like just plain fun. Ha!

Once I get that shipment off, it is time to get the shipment ready for Ferrar, Italy for the Trevisan Art show. One piece is coming home from Chicago and then it is time to address my web presence.

Marketing on the web is something I intend to learn much as a person dedicates him or herself to learning a foreign language. The temptation when one has a career in the arts is to become very scattered. When I was working withing the system… teaching high school the deadlines were clear. Attendance, bells, narrow hallways, finals. There was a rhythm of order.

Being an artist with the ability to make so many choices is a bit like falling down the rabbit hole as depicted by Disney. All of the objects of desire fall past, this thought, that show, perhaps an opportunity, a flash of inspiration like a passing mirror. So much that can possibly happen. But, what, can the artist do which is the best use of time, energy, materials and money? That is the challenge.

So often we continue to work to the siren song of “exposure”. Why if you donate to us, if you do this event for free, if you enter this show, it will give you “exposure”.
