How much better it would be to have this area a designated heritage area where the history of those hard working individuals who helped build Kelowna is preserved. Let us move forward on the heritage plan that was suggested in the 1990’s before we destroy the bungalows of history.

As the centre of Kelowna moves closer and closer to the Knox Mountain area, the likelihood of building structures that do not have the look and feel of the area increases. The time to move forward and make a plan for preserving the city’s history is now. The time to plan an experience of the culture of the arts and the culture of Kelowna’s urban history is now. Let us think how to both protect the “Knox Mountain Village” and help it become a tourist attraction.

Most Liveable Cities Debate on CBC

Yesterday, on the new show The Point hosted by Aamer Haleemthe issue of criteria for most liveable cities was discussed. http://www.cbc.ca/thepoint. One panel member who was a writer for an arts magazine in Calgary felt that these list are mostly about low crime, low cost of living and have very little to do with the ambiance and vibe of a city. One point that really struck home with me was the issue of disparity. When a city has multiple homes for the rich and few homes for the working class… turning them into the “working poor” then the city becomes uncomfortable and therefore unlivable.

Kelowna once hosted two professors from Lethbridge that discussed what Canadians were looking for in livable mid-sized cities and the list was short: inexpensive housing and cost of living; low crime rate; unpolluted environment;a place to walk the dog. We have just returned from Portland where the sun was glorious, the art galleries plentiful, parks around every turn and the possibilities for exploring constant. Compared to other American enclaves that we had experienced in our stops on the drive down, the Portland resident seems to be either the cause or the effect of an environment that produces slim, healthy, astute citizens.
