Cultural Community

Tonight I went to two events. The first was a group of people interested in working on their presence in the world through retreats, conferences and reading. The second was a group gathered together by UBC-O’s creative studies department to learn which individuals were to be awarded the top three places by guest judge Annabell Lyons. http://annabellyon.blogspot.com/
It was a joyous, relaxed evening.
At the first event, I met three people formally that I had passed in my life. We shared many experiences. One used to own a book store where I was selling art work on commission. Another taught dance in the building where I had my studio. A third was a close friend of a friend. It is interesting to see where connections can lead. It is why my daughter keeps telling me to go out the door. Staying home in my diaphanous Emily Dickens reclusiveness is not moving me on from this stuck place in my life.

At the short story competition announcement, I got to hear readings from four writer’s works. It was varied, skilled and interesting work. I had the audacity to take flyers of my poetry anthology which is for sale on LuLu and handed them out to four people. It took guts. I felt very hesitant but know that I have to start getting behind my talent if I want to make money from the work I am doing. My anthology is 36 pages of poetry written over the last year and posted to facebook.

My hopes are that the process of advertising my work becomes easier and more natural for me. Finding a gallery, an agent, a way to run the work I have been doing for thirty years up to a point where it begins to create it’s own energy is what will happen if I keep working to that goal.
I am going to a retreat in Victoria for the last week in March and really happy about having some time away. Life has been very lonely and quiet. Shows are coming up: Myths and Legends opens Saturday night at 273 Bernard; Digital Art show in Vernon t.b.a.; Sopa Under 8 in April. Currently, I have a show at the Unitarian Fellowship Hall which is a wonderful space to show art.

Plans to attend the Permaculture group meeting for tomorrow night are flying around in my head. I also feel like getting out to see a movie or go to Chapters. I have been disciplined this week working on art, cleaning the house, feeding my blog. Tomorrow, I need to prepare for my course at UBC-O Continuing Studies teaching Grammar Lite. Being back in the classroom is always a rush for me. I love to react to what it is my students need. Teaching, for me, is not about feeding a baby. Open the door. Here it comes. Neither is it like teaching steps in a dance routine. People need to know what they are ready to learn. I guess the really challenging aspect of teaching is being able to deal with four or five levels at the same time. It is a challenge; however, it is a thrill to walk out of a room knowing that you have awakened confidence and curiosity in your students. I love it.

I am thinking that it is time to go through all of the boxes of ballast I have in the shed. Clothing, books and fabrics can be freed, reorganized and utilized to create some revue for me. What I am not wearing, I must sell. The separation settlement left me in a position whereby I must start doing things to dig myself out. Listening to Tony Robbins was inspiring yesterday. Tomorrow I will sit down and brain storm 200 methods of bringing in prosperity to deal with the giant debt I had to take on to be free. Now I will find a way to be free of the weight of this debt.

Recently, I created two book jackets for a client who is a poet. I also created a banner for his web site. I worked images as far as I could in Gimp then I finally broke down and downloaded a free trial of Photoshop. Some of the images I created from playing with photoshop were interesting. I am missing my Flaming Pear, Eye Candy and Painter filters that went bye bye with the multiple crashes on my computer during my dark and disheveled days this last year. My creativity is coming back and the feeling of anticipation for what will be is like the pink shoots in my flower bed. Promising.

The images that I selected for the show are always a bit of a gamble. Does one select works that the public might understand, or does one go to the works that one loves.

What the weather says..

Rain, wind, sun, clouds, sun, big wind. We had serious multiple personality expressions in the weather today. Cameron and I soldiered on and got all of the dry wall up and mudded and taped. Today, for a change, I swept, vaccumed and mopped the floor four times. Keeping the dry wall dust out of every surface in the house is an agean stables activity meant to increase my flexibility both physically and psychologically.

I did take a break to work in the garden for about an hour. The new wavy waterfall of bamboo grass that I bought promises to spill luxuriously down from a planter a distance of five feet. It will be fun to watch it develop.

A friend, Ann Tracy, sent through an email saying a place in Florida wants alligator art so I worked on that while I waited for the dust and grit and dirt to build up again. I am including the three versions that I created.

What is Urban Art?

Art which is most powerful in a contemporary/urban setting seems to bloom when it is placed for maximum effect. I was very pleased when Rob Chetner of TC Homes emailed me and asked if I could place my art in his new waterfront development on the West Side of Kelowna.

My work has found a setting that really shows its quirkiness, its movement and its intensity. What better way to have a contemporary art form showcased but in a contemporary environment? It spurs me on to seek other sleek settings for the work that I call art for those on the forward edge.

Challenge or Warning, How to tell.

In life one of the things I find the most difficult is to ascertain when something is a challenge or a warning. How does one tell the difference? It takes a lifetime of running off the road, finding one’s wheels spinning in the sky before one begins to understand. I still don’t.

However, there are things that as Douglas Coupland points out, are not worth it. He said, “Find out what you don’t want to do and then don’t do it.”

Sometimes, nevertheless, by walking away from difficulties we shrink. We shrink from learning to push on. We shrink in size because we didn’t stretch our bodies, our minds, our spirits. With students, I am frequently encouraging them to think step by step. I ask them to remind themselves that they are “the worst you will ever be at…. (fill in the task) today. Tomorrow you will be better as you practice.”

It is very difficult to assess yourself without criticism… at least for me. My expectations are frequently so expansive that I run aground on the shoals of my own ambition. Competitiveness also puts me in a place whereby I am judging both others and myself to see who is “ahead.” This attitude is poisonous. It is like a long-distance runner who turns to check others in the race. All track and field coaches point out that that split second when the runner’s mind is off of the race, is when he or she loses. The athlete loses the ability to focus. The runner loses the ability to “be” in his or her body fully and efficiently. He or she loses a connectedness with the ground, the air, the energy flow. And it is given over to the other runners. In a meet if this happened not one runner is present. In life, we who have a tendency to judge and be competitive lose the opportunity to be present.

Flow-Stab energy flow

Flow-Stab energy flow

Life seems tough for cheap levitra this page a teenage boy because of peer pressure. Further, these contents inhibit the performance of PDE-5 in body and promote 100mg sildenafil blood flow to the genitals. It can also address neurological disorders, work related injuries, pdxcommercial.com free cialis no prescription and a variety of other conditions and illnesses. Inlife offers a cialis in canada browse this pharmacy store now binary compensation plan with unilevel bonuses and commissions that are remunerated on weekly basis. So how best to work with these tendencies? First of all being aware of how one is feeling is crucial. To observe the emotion gently seems to go a long way to loosening their grip on me.

A warning that one is running on the wrong track comes from a sense of being trapped, of a closing down of the body, of a lessening of energy. Sometimes if one persists and increases skill, one can push through the initial resistance.

On the other hand, when the resistance persists. When the task is increasingly frustrating, it is best to take Coupland’s advice and hand it over to another who joyously and fairly effortlessly can help you. So the final observation that I am making in my life is that there are others on the team, in your tribe who can assist. But there are times when… one must take on the challenge and keep on going on in order to grow.

It is much like working out. If you are in pain the next day and can’t move… then you have done yourself an injury. If you feel warmth in your body and a revitalized energy, you are on the path. I am looking for that feeling in everything I do.

Wish me luck!

What is art? Los Angeles Centre for Digital Art Show

Today I worked a few images that  are processed in the manner that is my practice. I selected photographs, worked the images in the Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 and then layered, highlighted and dropped worked images into worked images. Layering, distortion, filtering leads me to the jpg image. If a customer wishes to order an image from my bank… I print it out on canvas and the fun begins.

Art for those on the Forward Edge

The glow of windows on the fabric of life, digital

I have been thinking a lot lately about who the perfect customer is for my art. Those who seem to fall in love with it are graphic and fine art students. Others are people who live in several cities. And, also, healing practictioners love the fields of energy depicted in my work. What have these people have in common: not income, not age demographics, not philosophy of life. They are all very much into exploring the Urban environment and finding unique ways to express themselves. Hence the slogan…

Another concept that I have been able to stand back and formulate from observing my work is that it has different life in differing light. Because Kelowna is brilliantly tropical in lighting over the summer and then plunged into a gloomy gray throughout most of the rest of the year, a work of art has to live in different levels of illumination. I have been painting into the images with the idea of giving the work a totally distinct personality depending on the conditions. The background blacks move to the forefront as the evening arrives and the art light bathes the surface. During mid day, the light washes over the surface and brings up the metallics, the layering of green, gold, red or blue beneath the glass bead. At times, the foreground is one structure and at another time of day, the foreground is another structure.

A lot of males that experience suffer with thoughts of incompleteness; they order cialis uk experience un-manly, poor, and very insecure. Like the personality of individuals, there is a shifting of qualities. Also, I have begun to realize that what I am painting IS energy fields. It is interesting to see that so much of my life experience is in my work: dance training, theatrical training, lyrical love of music and spiritual practice. The work has found me, I have not found it. I let the work itself drive the exploration.

We watched a dvd last night called “Cooking your Life.” Focused on a Zen retreat whereby the participants cook and bake in order to explore themselves, the video is inspiring. One Zen student said, “When people ask, ‘ how are you?’ I answer, ‘I am baking bread.’ ” When people say to me how do you get the idea for your art, I know that the art has the idea of me.

Portland Living in the Light

Murals have sprung up all over the cityPillars of old structures are used to create sculpture

We have just returned from Portland where the sun was glorious, the art galleries plentiful, parks around every turn and the possibilities for exploring constant. Compared to other American enclaves that we had experienced in our stops on the drive down, the Portland resident seems to be either the cause or the effect of an environment that produces slim, healthy, astute citizens. Women in flowered skirts were carefully helmeted but got around the city on bicycle.

Perhaps, all of the “done to the eyes” matrons were up the hills and not mixing with the populous. At any rate, most of the fashion is studiedly casual. Thrift Chic has become looks like thrift chic.

One fair we attended had brilliantly redesigned recycled clothing which was carefully and fashionably restructured. We found this fair thanks to an email from Greg Pitters, a Portlander I met when he selected some of my designs for his modern, edgy wall decor (check out http://www.designyourwall.com). His wife and her business partner helped to organize the event. Even his young son had work on display and has had three one-man shows. The packed-full-of-art event was held at the Doug Fir Lounge. Cameron was very pleased to find his long-sought after lime soap. Three years ago he found lime soap at a high-end design store in Portland and has been yearning for that clean expression to waft in his bath ever since.

Portland has done so many things right that it is hard to discuss them all at once, so I probably won’t. Parks abound. We went on an urban hike up through the Washington Park area that took us up to the look out. The white puff of smoke from the Adams fire was visible and the mountains were hazily visible. People played cards, had pic nics, read books and just sleep on the grass. The feeling of safety, of utility in the public space was wonderful. It was an outdoor livingroom.

Creating Art for the market

Only once did we experience the presence of poor tortured souls who were trying to find happiness in a self-destructive manner. A group of four who were stoned and drunk got on the train and sat around us. The obese, highly flammable (gauging from his breath) man sat next to me… after he asked me if it was alright. Then he apologized for spilling over onto my seat. Even in the depths of what ever depths he had chosen to visit, he was polite.

After returning from hours of walking freely along the river, riding transport throughout the city and visiting over ten art galleries in a four block area, It is easy to see why Portland is considered to be one of the most liveable cities in the U.S. In addition, the people were answering the questions we posited to one another about when or where as we negotiated the city. They are discreetly helpful. No in-your-face questions about hidden tattoos or birthmarks, just a desire to be of use was the motivation. The red fire truck and yellow helmets of the firemen against this building!

There are a lot of things happening in my life. Art shows are coming up. Pieces are selling. I am moving into the multi-media, non representational, abstract geometric realm with gusto. Several years of secretly working these images has given me the confidence to start putting them out there. The images originate from my childhood when I would close my eyes when hearing music and see shapes and colors dancing. Now they dance for all to see.

The definition for Abstract art is art that departs significantly from natural appearances. Forms are modified or changed to varying degrees in order to emphasize certain qualities or content. Recognizable references to original appearances may be slight. The term is also used to describe art that is nonrepresentational. Artist Cherie Hanson begins with a photograph that holds meaning for her and abstracts it. The resulting image is bold, colorful and visually intense. Foreground, mid ground and background shifts as well as movement on the surface of the image create images which “dance on canvas”.

September, 2008, Bean Scene North, “Rivers of Europe,” Giclee/multi-media photography of the artist’s visit to Florence, Rome, London and Paris. A series of large images taken in winter 2007 of the Seine, Arno, Tiber and Thames.
