The morning after

Who hit me with an anvil/hammer thing. Sore everywhere. Long hours at these festivals. We had eleven hours Friday, ten hours Saturday and a mere six hours Sunday. Janice across the way modeled the good behavior of cleaning up the studio before I left, so we were both there a good hour and 1/2 after the rest cleared out.

It was good to see so many people discover the attic in the Rotary Centre. Because of the layout of the building, it appears as if the area where we are working is a no go zone. Most are being thoughtful or polite by not coming back along the bend in the wall and traveling up our hallway to discover…. us!

Another cold, gray day. However, the weather channel promises us that we will all be living in the tropics by Wednesday. Where is that instant season switch on my body?

But while we are whining about the weather we do mention that we can’t complain. There are no funnel clouds, no earthquakes, we are not standing waist deep in the aquarium of our homes, there are no tropical rainstorms, tsunamis, electrical storms burning the powerlines into powder. See, we do live in paradise.

Point of view.

Art Walk is the next art festival that all of us at the Rotary Centre are participating in. I have the One Woman show in July and another at the end of August. Also, two images are now on display in Toronto and one in Sacramento. Edmonton’s The Works festival has some of my art at the consignment tent, as well. In September I am preparing a bridges of Europe series for the Bean Scene North on Ellis street. Meanwhile, I finished many hand made art cards to go for sale at Shop the Valley, Summerhill winery.

I have begun the article for Senior’s Choice Magazine about the senior senoras at the Centre. I expect to learn a great deal about the women artists who have studios surrounding mine. It will be interesting.

Kelowna is beyond the crossroads. I remember when five years ago people spoke about the cross roads. Now we are just putting in more roads period. The design to hold long-term value comes as a result of vision on the part of the public and the politicians. When we run our household, we have a strategy and a governing philosophy in place. Our family has practices that we adhere to. Yes, buying a new computer would be fantastic but our goal is to pay down our debts. Without a firm commitment to a philosophy, we are at the whim of our own urges.

And we all know how amazingly agile the mind is at creating justifications for variants from the vision. Be it variants from requiring parking, considering run off, providing affordable housing, keeping the seniors in place in a neighbourhood which will protect and look out for them, so many editions arise. If acquiring some glittering gold blinds us and it will, then we veer.

We can create justification for any decision in the moment if we are after money, power, status instead of adhering to a path of stewardship of the environment and the community. Why wouldn’t it be just as difficult for a government to stick to a vision as it is for an individual? Having the Part of the globe series to revisit is one way of dealing with the vicissitudes of political life.

Anyone interested in environmental issues, urban development or green building will benefit from the insert green magazine in last week’s New York Times. Every item is instructive. The car…. the last real addiction we have to break. How often we jump in the car and run to the store? We carefully purchase local, organic food taking it out of the store in cloth bags and recycle compost, containers, newspapers. We purchase clothing and household items at second hand stores and take anything we are no longer using to donate to a charity thrift shop…. but we do it in the car.

We see that the next step is to shift over to our lower gas guzzling truck for more trips. Why is it that attachments seem so long to dissolve? Wayne Dyer says we can just decide to become more…. whatever and it is done. But it is my experience that it is more a process of intention setting, dissolution of attachment and habit. It reminds me of when my daughter used to wrap her fingers around the railing on the crib to hold herself back from going to sleep. I had to unwrap her fingers one at a time. It is what we are doing…. one finger at a time.

So much creativity exists in Kelowna. What we are all hoping for is the creation of an arts destination. Working together in groups can raise the energy. We are here to help one another grow as artists and as business people. What an adventure!

I started an online group today Artistic Kelowna. It will be interesting to see where it goes.

Underneath, all of this activity is going on.

I watched Oprah’s last installment last night, or rather listened as I painted some of the new works I am preparing for the Summerland show. The feeling of running in wet sand has been rather overwhelming lately. All of the people I know are working in a very concentrated and inspired manner on their art, hoping that eventually Kelowna will be perceived as a destination for art tourism.

We are hoping that once enough pieces of the puzzle are put together… the big picture will be the result.

There are a lot of things happening in my life. Art shows are coming up. Pieces are selling. I am moving into the multi-media, non representational, abstract geometric realm with gusto. Several years of secretly working these images has given me the confidence to start putting them out there. The images originate from my childhood when I would close my eyes when hearing music and see shapes and colors dancing. Now they dance for all to see.

The definition for Abstract art is art that departs significantly from natural appearances. Forms are modified or changed to varying degrees in order to emphasize certain qualities or content. Recognizable references to original appearances may be slight. The term is also used to describe art that is nonrepresentational. Artist Cherie Hanson begins with a photograph that holds meaning for her and abstracts it. The resulting image is bold, colorful and visually intense. Foreground, mid ground and background shifts as well as movement on the surface of the image create images which “dance on canvas”.

September, 2008, Bean Scene North, “Rivers of Europe,” Giclee/multi-media photography of the artist’s visit to Florence, Rome, London and Paris. A series of large images taken in winter 2007 of the Seine, Arno, Tiber and Thames.
